ok so my stupid question of the day is i keep seeing ranks on here (i.e. mudcrab etc) so what are those for and how do they get changed? bahhaha me and my noobishness!!

The ranks that you see under people's usernames are posting ranks. The more posts you make, the closer you get to ascending to the next rank. It's sort of a way to recognize members who post often on the Forum, as well as to encourage new members to post more often.
