Actually cockroaches surviving nuclear Apocalypses is basically the urban equivalent as alligators in the sewer.

It comes from a myth about a scientist conducting an experiment which had a radioactive byproduct, the byproduct was scooped up into a bag, along with a few roaches, and thrown into a dumpster.

Somewhere along down the line, the roaches find their way into a cereal box, in which a surprised person realized that they were in a bag with nuclear waste, so that's where it comes from. So, no; it hasn't been proven. Unless if you want to.

As far as I'm concerned, many of these facts aren't even proven to be true. Still, it's fun to read and contemplate some of the more interesting ones, whether they're fact or fiction.
